How long have you been playing trumpet and what drew you to it?

It’s been 1.5 years now and was influenced by trumpets in modern production such as Brasstracks initially.

What’s your musical background like? What instruments do you play (whether it’s just dabbling or advanced)?

I’ve been playing music classically since a young age and transitioned into jazz-influenced and modern styles on the piano and guitar.

How would you compare learning the trumpet to learning those other instruments? I’m assuming it’s the hardest so far- would you say that’s the case?

It is definitely the most difficult to get into. Unlike other instruments where you can play simple things within the first week or month, the trumpet took way longer for me to play simple melodies and scales even though I could memorize the fingerings. It also requires more maintenance and diligence both for the instrument and embouchure.

I know you have been very diligent and consistent in your practicing - do you think this has been key to learning quickly?

I think it has helped although the speed at which you progress on the trumpet seems a lot slower compared to other instruments.

Have you taken any days or weeks off from the trumpet? And if so, can you feel a big difference coming back to the horn when you take that break?

I have taken 1 week off at most and now it takes about 2 or 3 days to get back in shape. In the beginning, a break would almost seem like a huge chunk of progress was taken away (this also had to do with learning to take meaningful breaks and letting your embouchure actually recover).

You practice fundamentals with trumpetwarmup.com almost every day (if not every day)… What’s the most advantageous part of using the website? Why not just practice the exercises without the videos?

I like reminding myself of the sound of a professional trumpet player and now that I have set up the habit it's just second nature to go through the videos.
